Sky after a session

Sky, who’s real name is Emily vom Haus Kugel is on her 5th odor as of today. She was trained first on Semtex, then C-4, PETN/Det-cord, PETN/Datasheet, TNT and today on Smokeless Powder. Only a couple more odors and she’ll be finished and ready for an “oral bridge” and then on to the oral game.

It’s amazing to see her learn a new odor in less than 15 minutes using Randy’s boxes. I’ve seen it before with the drug dogs, but narcotic detector dogs only learn 4 odors. Explosive dogs need 7-9 odors and using other methods that can take quite a while. After I got her locked in on Semtex, I was able to add an odor every other day. I could have done an odor a day, but I like to go one day with a new odor and then the next day a refresher with a known odor.

It’s a shame not to get her on the street, but she is my number one foundation bitch for my kennel. Her breeding to U was amazing and against my better judgment I kept four of the puppies to train them myself all the way to finished K9s. You can read about them on the Puppies blogs.
