Tea Does Her Oral Bridge

Tea On The BoxesCeline put an “oral Bridge” on Tea today with marijuana. Tea is starting to do a nose bump as her indication which is what Celine is looking for.

Celine has been working hard on getting Tea finished, before she leaves for Connecticut to see Nana and Pepe. Well tonight, Celine worked Tea on cocaine and got the fourth and final odor she needed.

Celine Goes Tracking

celinetrackingyariCeline went tracking with me today out at the turf farm. We are lucky enough to have access to the fields at Fast Grass for our tracking. They are huge and always in good shape, which makes it easy for us to teach the dogs how to track.

In the photo Celine is tracking Yari, a Belgian Malinois that has been tracking for about three weeks. Tracking is a great way to decompress and enjoy a nice walk with a dog.  The bonus is you are actually working, and working the dog at the same time. All while taking a walk out in nature. I really enjoy tracking. I was able to spend time with Celine, teaching her how to lay tracks and work the dogs, so that made it even better.

Arok des Reve des Loups

Arok is my tracking fool. He spends his whole time out of the kennel running with his nose to the ground looking for who knows what. I can hardly get him to play with anything he is so focused on sniffing around.

I already started him on tracking in the parking lot near the raining center. He is being trained using the HITT method by Steve White from Seattle. Seems to be working well for him so far. I’m new to this method so I expect to have some bumps in the road with it. Arok is so food motivated though it should work out fine.

Meet The Puppies

I thought I’d take a minute and introduce U and Sky’s puppies or at least the ones I am keeping. There are four of them here at Alpha K9 in Nebraska, all of them will be trained as police K9s.

Clyde Fits In Fine In Utah

Michael Breton - Sunday, 15 November 2009 01:19

dayoffJust got a couple of photos of Clyde and he looks like one happy dog. Brandon is working hard to be the best handler he can be. After hanging out with him for a while and seeing what an overachiever he is, I know he’ll be great at it.

It’s so cool to see Clyde doing the job he was meant to do. He looks the part of a police K9 now and from all the reports I am getting he is acting the part as well. He sure has the relaxing on his day off part down. Clyde is a great dope dog, he loves to work and has a great nose. More important he is a smart dog, something I really look hard for in a dog. Drive is nice, drive you can harness is great.

The word is his tracking is really coming along and his bite work is getting better at every session. I knew he could track, but wasn’t so sure on the bite work. I love to be proved wrong by one of my dogs.

Take a look at Clyde dressed for work with his game face on. Now that is one good looking Sheriff K9.

Capri Gets A Job As the First Waterfowl Detector Dog

Michael Breton - Friday, 6 November 2009 11:04

I just shipped Capri off to Darryn from Fish and Wildlife. She is going to be his waterfowl detector dog and Rudi’s playmate. His son Eli is so jazzed about her, as technicaly Eli considers her to be his dog.

Capri made the trip just fine and Eli is already lobbying for her to stay in his room. Bet he wins that one pretty quick. She’ll take a couple weeks to move from the detector boxes to an oral game and vehicle searches.  Darryn will be searching lots of boats and blinds and I just don’t have that kind of stuff here to work her on. Darryn knows what he’s doing so I’m sure Capri will do just fine.

I’ll get some photos of her with her new family as soon as I can. Darryn promised to send some out to me via Facebook. His wife is yet to meet Capri, but at least she does know the dog is there. A strange malinois in your house can be quite the suprise.

Good luck Capri, I’ll see you soon. I’m working on a patrol dog class for Darryn. Yeah, I know dogs can’t read, but she is a malinois and one can never rule anything out.

Back Home Again

Michael Breton - Friday, 28 August 2009 11:28

Laying a Track For HomeI’m back in Washington again. Alpha K9 and Forest Top are working through some tough issues and everyone is having a bit of a hard time dealing with it. I have a family to take care of so they take priority and off I go. Not sure exactly what happened, probably never will, but life goes on.

I met some great people while I was in Nebraska. I enjoyed my time there and wish everyone well. Many thanks to Mark who went out of his way to make me feel at home and even more important to get me out and about the area.

Protection Day With Sioux City, and Cass County Sheriffs

Michael Breton - Friday, 7 August 2009 01:37

mooseI worked dogs from Cass County and Sioux City this afternoon. Jay’s dog just won the Police K9 Nationals and he was ready to step up his protection. Rob wanted to work on Moose’s grips and Mark, well he thinks his dog is perfect.

Jay’s dog is young and really nice and clear. We are going to work on his grips and attitude, but I see great things in the future for this dog.

Rob’s dog had some problems with grips a couple sessions ago. We already had one session and made a lot of progress in just that one session. From the video you can see Moose is constantly driving into me and has virtually no problems with physical contact or pressure.

Marks dog turned out to be ticklish, but I doubt anyone will have time to tickle him if he is on a bite.

I included some new toys in the training, the clatter stick, a milk bottle full of rocks and water. All of the dogs had clean heads when we were done. I’ll get video up of the other two dogs, but here is Moose working me over.

Alpha K9 Graduates First handler Class From Nebraska Facility

Michael Breton - Friday, 31 July 2009 12:02
Randy, Darryn and Rudi

Graduation day, Darryn and Rudi leave for their duty assignment

Our first handler class from the Nebraska graduated this weekend. Three sheriffs from Utah, one sheriff from Nebraska and a Fish and Wildlife officer all certified and took home their new K9 partners.

Darryn took home Rudi, a Belgian Malinois trained in narcotics detection and tracking. He’ll be working the river in a boat as soon as he gets him home.

Jake, Jeremy and Seth will be patroling Davis County, Utah with their new partners Dax a Malinois, J’ak also a Malinois and Mojo a Dutch Shepherd. All three of their dogs are dual-purpose patrol and detector dogs.

Thanks guys for working so hard and making it such a great class. You can see video of the dogs and handlers on other posts.

Good luck and stay safe.

Mojo on a “Code 3″ takedown

Michael Breton - Monday, 27 July 2009 11:00

Here is Mojo coming after me one night while we were practicing code 3 apprehensions. He was coming too high on the arm and way fast and as a result, missed me or flew off the bite. We worked on it for a bit and this was the end result. Center mass right in the back. Nice job Mojo and Seth.

Celine Steps Up

Michael Breton - Wednesday, 22 July 2009 02:36

Celine Tracking a PuppyChad went to Chicago to work a re-bar job today, so Celine is taking his place while she is here on summer holiday. She worked at Cascade K9 for 4 years so she knows the ropes at a kennel. This is no ordinary kennel. All of the dogs are police k9s in training. Kind of a working vacation instead of TV and bon-bons.

A couple of dogs here are going to be a challenge for her. She swears Yari and Glock have it out for her, but they just like to make noise and see who they can punk out. I’m doubting they’ll punk her. Yari is a big Malinois, really big, really loud and Glock is a Dutch Shepherd. Glock by the way loves to smile at you, so he is always flashing teeth when you see him.

This will be a great way for her to earn the cash for the laptop she wants and I’m betting it gets taken care of better if it’s from her money.

OMG, I’m So Sore

Michael Breton - Wednesday, 22 July 2009 01:42

Michael with N'ZoI worked out with Celine yesterday and I have no doubt I went overboard. If I could get the bullet in my gun and pull the trigger, I’d put myself out of my misery, but I’m hurting too bad. In case you haven’t heard, Celine has a big $100.00 bet going with Pascale, on who will be the buffest of the two. Celine does not want to lose this bet.

Pascale is working out with her friend Kate, who is a personal trainer. They are training for the Harris marathon in November. She’s walking 7 to 10 miles three times a week, 8-12 twice a week and 17+ once a week. Top that all off with lifting 4 times a week and she is going to be buff. I wish I could enjoy the buffness, but I’m stuck here for now and will just have to enjoy it in my mind.

Celine has her work cut out for her, but she is working hard and no matter what I’m really proud of her. I just wish she was sore too. Misery loves company.

Me on the other hand, I am old, no doubt about it. I haven’t been this sore in a long time. I can catch dogs for hours, but lifting weights and the Nordic Track are killing me. I know I need to get in better shape if I want to keep catching dogs, but damn this hurts.
